Mint, the medieval herb has found its applications in diet and health care since ages. It’s rich medicinal value makes it the best ingredient for several uses in our daily lives even in its oil form. The oil is usually extracted through steam distillation and cold-press processes from its highly aromatic leaves.
Though there are many uses of the varieties of mint oils, very little is known about them. So, let’s dig deep into the therapeutic values of mint as oil and its best varieties.
Why Mint Oil?
Mint oil has proved to have very good analgesic, anti-inflammatory, calming, cooling and anti-spasmodic properties and hence, it is for this reason, it is one of the most widely used varieties of essential oils in health care. Whether you want to get rid of painful muscle spasms or stomach sickness, all you need is the mint essential oil. Mint is widely used as natural cooling agent that helps lower the temperature of your body. It is exceptionally good in relieving painful sunburns and skin irritations due to its anti-inflammatory properties. Mint stimulates your senses and enhances your energy levels. Hence, it is usually taken in form of mint tea or used in bath in order to awaken mind and body. Just few drops of essential mint oil in your bath or shower will leave you energized and going for the entire day.
Applications of Peppermint Oil
One of most versatile forms of mint oil which also makes it one of the most widely used of the essential oils is the peppermint oil. Pale yellow in colour, this essential oil is very good for skin and hair care. It can be a great addition to your beauty routine for a fresh-looking and revitalized skin all the day. It makes up a good combo with eucalyptus oil for acne-prone skin. Several hair care products used for dandruff control, lice treatment, scalp health and hair growth also include peppermint essential oil. Now-a-days, you can even find many oral health products like toothpastes, mouth wash and breath fresheners containing menthol as active ingredient and peppermint oil is used in them as their essential component. Apart hair, skin and oral care, peppermint is used for treating several health conditions like allergies, headaches or migraines, indigestion, hormonal imbalance, obesity, cold and flu etc.
Spearmint Oil
Spearmint or mentha spicata essential oil when applied to the skin with right carrier oil can improve the health of the skin and also reduce swelling caused due to muscle or nerve pains. Pleasantly smelling and sweeter in taste than peppermint, spearmint is used in number of health-food and oral hygiene products. Having very good anti-fungal and antioxidant properties, it is preferred in natural food preservation process and also used in preparation of insecticides and bug repellants. Health conditions like diarrhea, fatigue, arthritis, sore throat, cramps, cold and headache can be effectively treated with spearmint oil.
However, its always recommended to use essential oils in diluted form and so is in the case of mint oil as well. Dilute your oil with right carrier oil and proper proportions to avoid any kind of adverse effects while getting the wholesome benefits of the oils mixed.
